The Academic Writing Studio: information for Australians & New Zealanders
Perth: Monday 6 p.m.
Brisbane: Monday 8 p.m./Tues 6 a.m.
Adelaide: Tuesday 6:30 a.m.
Melbourne, Sydney, Hobart: Tuesday 7 a.m.
Auckland: Tuesday 9 a.m.
The heart of the Academic Writing Studio is A Meeting With Your Writing, a synchronous event that helps you keep your commitment to write through group membership, payment, and the ability to tell colleagues that you “have a conference call”.
We use Zoom for the sessions, so joining is not a problem. The big issue is whether the time zone works. Since we’ve added a 3rd time on Mondays, this works much better for most of you.
If you are in Perth the earliest Monday meeting is late afternoon or evening for you. From November to March it’s at 6 p.m.; from April to October it’s a 5 p.m.
If you are in Sydney or Melbourne, the combination of your DST shift and ours makes things complicated. From November to March, it makes more sense to join us early on Tuesday morning when our latest Monday session is 7 a.m. for you. From April to October, the earliest Monday Meeting With Your Writing is at 7 p.m. Monday your time.
If you are in New Zealand, Tuesday mornings work all year. Our latest Monday session is 9 a.m. Tuesday from November to March, and 8 a.m. Tuesday from April to October.
Timeanddate.com or the time zone support in your electronic calendar will be helpful. There will be a couple of weeks where things are a mess because the switch in and out of DST happens on different dates.
On sensible working hours
A big part of the culture of my business is that you shouldn’t be working at all hours. I strongly believe that it is possible for you to have sensible hours and a life outside of work.
That said, you do have flexibility.
Also, different people work best at different times of day.
If A Meeting With Your Writing would help you write regularly during term time, and you can make that time work for you, you are more than welcome to join us.
I recommend you compensate for an early start or a late finish to your work day with a corresponding early finish or late start. Or maybe a long break in the middle of the day, or a short day somewhere else. in your week.
Other elements of the Studio:
Planning Classes, Establishing A Writing Practice, and group coaching sessions are currently offered at times that work for both Europe and North America. Attending these sessions live will probably not work for you.
The sessions are recorded and the Planning Classes include substantial self-paced materials. Previous participants who have been unable to attend live have let us know that using the recordings is effective and beneficial.
Because your academic year aligns with the calendar year, we recommend that you do the Annual Planning Class in December. You’ll still be starting with writing before transitioning to the new academic teaching year.
Want to join the Studio?
A full membership is £55 per month paid by recurring payment, with options to pay less or more depending on your circumstances.
