Supporting your research and writing journey

Privacy Policy

This page is a work in progress. My intentions are honourable. (I’m aware that’s not good enough. The road to hell and all that.) My grasp of legal nuance is not so hot. But better to start with half-baked and get better than just ignore this thing altogether.

Membership data

I use the MemberPress plug in to manage membership on this site. Personal information associated with your membership, including transaction history, is stored on the same server as the website. No payment information is stored on my website or accessible to me apart from the amount paid, the date, and the processor used (Stripe or PayPal). I use Stripe and PayPal to process payments. They do not disclose credit card or other payment information to me. Please see their sites for how they store and protect your data.

Email list

When you join the Studio your information is passed to Mailchimp, which hosts my email list. If you are already on the email list, information about your Studio membership is added to your profile there. I use the email list to communicate with you about the Studio, primarily through a weekly newsletter. I do not share or sell your information with any other organization for any purpose.

Class and Office Hours Recordings

Classes and office hours are recorded and very little editing is done before they are shared. I only share the audio recording so your face and screen-name are not shared. Your first name may be used on conversation but I have no way of ensuring complete anonymity. We rely on the good faith of other studio members to keep what’s discussed confidential. If I share an (edited) chat transcript or write out a summary of what is said I use only first names or initials to semi-anonymize the speaker.

Coaching & micro-coaching

Individual coaching is offered in two ways: Confidence Boost sessions and micro-coaching during A Meeting With Your Writing. Meeting With Your Writing hosts may report issues to Jo VanEvery so she can follow up, or for planning services to offer to the group as a whole.

Confidence Boost sessions are recorded for your use. I keep some (franky quite sketchy) notes on paper. Recordings will be shared via a Google Drive folder. I encourage you to make a copy of the file and save it on your own drive. If you let me know when you have done that I will delete my copy.

Information shared in individual coaching sessions is confidential. Jo may use examples from our sessions in blog posts or newsletter articles but will always strive to make these anonymous and to combine information from more than one client to create an exemplar wherever possible.

We will not share identifying information with other parties nor reveal that we are working together without your permission. I may, from time to time, suggest a connection with someone else. I will never introduce you as a client. I meet a lot of people on Twitter and IRL and introduce people I meet that way to each other. There is no reason someone would assume you are a client.

Comments and contact form

Data in post comments and contact forms is stored on the server where the website is hosted. My hosting service also provides website security to prevent hacking (and deal with breaches quickly). I won’t ever use the information in the comment fields or contact form to put you on a list or anything, though I may e-mail you individually in relation to the comment or your question in a contact form.
